Freeskiing

Some of the world’s best freeskiers are home-grown in New Zealand. Our resorts have world-class terrain parks and halfpipes, and our steep backcountry terrain suits the adventurous Kiwi psyche. This, combined with our desire to win, leads to Kiwis landing on freeskiing podiums all around the globe. Snow Sports NZ support freeski athletes, here’s how…

New Zealand freeskiers have earned a strong reputation on the international stage. With our big mountain heritage, the park and pipe disciplines perfectly match our innovative and fearless spirit.

Trailblazers like Hamish Acland and Geoff Small paved the way, and today names such as Jossi WellsSam Smoothy and Nico Porteous are synonymous with freeskiing excellence. The sport reached new heights when freeskiing debuted as an official Olympic event at the Sochi Winter Games in 2014, where Snow Sports NZ athletes proudly represented Aotearoa.

Freeskiers in NZ enjoy world-class park and pipe facilities and full support from Cardrona Alpine Resort. The resort gets behind youth competition by hosting the Cardrona NZ Freeski & Snowboard Junior Nationals each year.
