Luke Harrold is the youngest Kiwi freeskier to achieve a World Cup podium, which he did in December 2023 at the age of 15. At the 2025 FIS Freeski Halfpipe World Championships he made history becoming the first person to ever land a triple corked rotation in freeski competition and finished in 4th place overall. 

In 2026 Luke finished in second place at the inaugral ski Snow League event held in China and finished in second place at the FIS Freeski Halfpipe World Cup season opener in Secret Garden, sharing a historic podium with teammate Fin Melville Ives.

Biography

Luke was born in Christchurch but calls Lake Hāwea home. He learnt to ski at Cardrona Alpine Resort with the local Hāwea Flat Primary School skiing programme, then began training with HPC in Cardrona where he developed his love for skiing and the tricks involved. He started competing in 2016 at the Junior Freestyle Nationals and in 2018 he was talent ID's by Snow Sports NZ and joined the National Development Team.

In 2023 Luke had a phenomenal year, claiming first place at both the FIS North American Cup and the FIS European Cup Premium Freeski Halfpipe competitions. He also finished in second place at the World Rookie Tour Finals Freeski Slopestyle event.

Luke carried his momentum into the 2023/24 season where he had his World Cup debut at the Freeski Halfpipe World Cup in China in December 2023.  Luke blew everyone away with his highly technical run, finishing in second place at his first ever World Cup, becoming the youngest Kiwi to ever podium at a FIS World Cup.

He then represented NZ at the Gangwon 2024 Youth Olympic Games as part of the cohort of kiwi's who made this NZ's most successful Youth Olympic Winter Games. Luke claimed the gold medal in Freeski Halfpipe and also snagged the bronze medal in Freeski Big Air.

In 2025 Luke made Freeski history when he became the first skier to ever land a triple corked rotation in competition, which he did at the 2025 FIS Park & Pipe World Championships, finishing in 4th place.
