Alice Robinson might have been disappointed with her overnight placing, coming in 16th in Lillehammer, but the fact remains she now ranks #2 in the world in Alpine Super G ski racing.
Robinson wasn’t able to pull off the result she needed in the final World Cup Super G of the season to take the Crystal Globe from frontrunner Sofia Goggia of Italy, who banked a time of 1:29.23 to emerge as the best female Super G skier in the world.
Robinson was +2.41s off that time and potentially knew from the start that the conditions were not in her favour.
“It wasn’t very enjoyable for me; it was still fun but it was soft and I couldn’t really push. I’m pretty disappointed but going from being ranked #17 last year to #2 this year, it’s a big jump,” she said afterwards.
“It [the Crystal Globe] was a possibility but it would have taken a lot. I didn’t really have a chance today; it was a bit of a long shot.”
Yet Robinson will bank the learnings. “I think my Super G has come such a long way but it’s still really lacking in some areas like these conditions. I’m not a fully rounded Super G skier yet; when the conditions suit me I’ve really stepped up my game to be competitive, but when it’s a bit straighter and soft I’ve still got a lot of work to do.”
Robinson went into the race on 386 points, 63 behind Goggia on 449 points. Robinson was the only skier capable of catching Goggia and had two recent podiums behind her.
Aside from her Super G ranking, she is also currently sitting at 5th in the world overall across Super G, Downhill and Giant Slalom, making her a kiwi legend and someone to watch closely next season.
