Call for Nominations to IPC Athletes' Council

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has opened up a call for nominations for the 2014 IPC Athletes' Council elections.

Only athletes competing at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games or who have competed in either of the two previous Paralympic Winter Games are eligible to be nominated. Only one athlete per National Paralympic Committee (NPC) is allowed to be on the Council at the same time, and NPCs can nominate only one candidate for election.

The nomination process will remain open until the end of 3 December. A complete list of candidates will be published two months prior to the Opening Ceremony of the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games, and voting will take place at the Games.

The IPC Athletes' Council is the collective voice of athletes within the Paralympic Movement. As the liaison between IPC decision-makers and Paralympic athletes, the IPC Athletes' Council works to provide effective input into decision-making at all levels of the organisation, including various committees and commissions, and it also enjoys cross-representation with the IOC Athletes' Commission.

Todd Nicholson, IPC Athletes' Council Chairperson, said: "As the Paralympic Movement continues to grow, we have a responsibility to ensure that the athlete voice is in the minds of everyone that is making the decisions regarding athletes and the success of the Paralympic Movement.

"I would encourage anyone that is willing to devote the time, commitment and leadership skills to become a part of history as the Paralympic Movement continues to exceed everyone's current expectations.

"Help us help you, by becoming a member of the IPC Athletes' Council. Our goal is to provide advice and guidance that will help make positive changes throughout Paralympic sport around the world."

It is recommended that candidates nominated have strong qualities of leadership, accomplishment, knowledge and respect, both on and off the field of play.

The IPC Athletes Council particularly welcomes candidates with experience in and a commitment to the advocacy of athlete related issues.

The full eligibility criteria for candidates are outlined in the IPC Handbook, Chapter 2.5.1, Appendix 2 under the title "IPC Athletes Council Nomination & Election Procedures" at www.paralympic.org/TheIPC/HWA/Handbook.
