Nic Cavanagh Appointed High Performance Director

Snow Sports NZ are pleased to announce that Nic Cavanagh has been appointed as High Performance Director.

Nic joined Snow Sports NZ in February 2012 as the Logistics Manager, with his role developing into a High Performance Manager position in 2018. He has played a pivotal part in the growth and success of high performance snow sports in New Zealand, supporting New Zealand athletes to medal-winning success at pinnacle events including the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, World Cups, World Championships and the X Games.

Snow Sports NZ CEO Jan Shearer commented: “We are delighted to confirm our strong internal candidate, Nic Cavanagh, has been appointed as HPD and Ashley Light’s successor.  We have been mindful of succession planning and as appropriate have developed talent from within the organisation knowing that one day Ash, our long standing and highly respected HPD, would leave.  A very smooth and professional transition is underway, and our staff and stakeholders are looking forward to working with Nic in his new role.”

Jan continued: “In many respects the Snow Sports NZ High Performance Programme is totally different to the one Ash joined 12 years ago; the successes of the athletes and the development of the high functioning performance team is a testament to his leadership and vision.  We wish Ash all the best in his next venture.”

Nic also congratulated Ashley for “the tremendous work he has done leading the High Performance team and ensuring a smooth transition as he now departs the organisation.”

He continued: “I am incredibly excited to be leading a world-class team of coaches and support staff towards the 2022 and 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. As a High Performance Programme we have achieved some amazing results in recent years. The challenge is to ensure our athletes consistently deliver multiple medal-winning performances in all disciplines at all levels.”

Ashley and Nic will continue to work together to ensure a seamless transition for athletes, coaches and support staff heading into Winter Games NZ in just under three weeks’ time. Nic will assume full duties from 1 September 2019.
