Anna grew up shredding the slopes of Treble Cone. As a small child she worried that a crash would lead to her falling off the mountain straight into Lake Wanaka below! Whether or not this fear helped keep her upright and solid on her skis, a few decades later Anna is still hussing down mountains, competing on the Freeride World Qualifier Tour, and is a member of the NZ Freeride team.
Career highlights: 1st place Jasna, Slovakia FWQ 4* 2016; 2nd place Big Mountain Hochfugen 4* 2018; 3rd place Jasna Adrenalin 4* 2018
A passion for snow must be in the Smoothy genes with Mum and Dad - Ron and Ellen Smoothy - both keen skiers and eager to get their offspring, Anna and big brother Sam, on skis as soon as possible. Anna still enjoys NZ winters skiing Treble Cone and bases herself in Europe for the northern hemisphere competition season. She competes on the Freeride World Qualifier Tour and also moonlights as a writer for the Freeride World Tour website.
Anna had a fantastic 2016 season competing in four-star FWQ events. She won the Jasna Adrenalin in Slovakia, finished seventh at Wrangle the Chute in Canada and ninth at the Nendaz Freeride in Switzerland. In 2017 she finished fourth at Big Mountain Hochfügen 4*, 5th at Freeride Hakuba 4* and 6th at Open Faces Obergurgl-Hochgurgl 4*.
When not skiing Anna works in the rural branches of Otago Radiology as a radiographer.
