Freeskiing NZ Events
An event pathway allows competitors to progress along the development pathway, with events at each level providing the competition platform for advancement in their progression.
The level of events rise through Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum AFP events, and FIS events, some of which are hosted in NZ, to the pinnacles of the Olympic Games, World Championships and Freeride World Tour.
Ski area and regional competitions provide the perfect environment for first competitions. A number of regional junior competitions are part of the Junior Series, which allows a national ranking system to measure the achievements of individuals.
For those athletes aged five to 18 who are moving along the pathway, Snow Sports NZ host the annual Junior Freeski Nationals. National Champions are named in each age category and discipline.
Snow Sports New Zealand organises and stages the New Zealand Freeski Open each year. This elite level event attracts more of the top skiers, including X-Games and Big Mountain World Tour medallists, than most other major events in the world with up to twelve nations represented.
Snow Sports NZ work alongside Winter Games NZ to promote this bi-annual international level event which in 2013 included World Cup Slopestyle and Halfpipe events.
Snow Sports NZ also run national development camps and facilitate training of national and international judges.
